In a number of cities across the country, credit unions have become much more involved in auto lending than just making loans or selling extended warranties-they're operating full-fledged auto dealerships.
In separate operations in Santa Rosa, Calif., and in South Florida the credit unions are leveraging the trust members have in them-and the same lack of trust most members have in auto dealers-to operate dealerships that offer not just cars, but many of the add-ons, as well. In at least one of the markets one of the credit unions is seeking to expand its operation.
