Nationwide Petition Drive Urges 'Save OurTax Exemption'

WASHINGTON - (01/11/05) -- The credit union lobby will have aspecial present for Congress when it meets here next month forCUNA's annual government affairs conference--millions of petitionsurging lawmakers to retain the credit union tax exemption. Thedrive is a response to the bankers' 'Operation Credit Union' anational campaign aimed at reigning in the tax exemption, accordingto Mark Lowe, spokesman for the California CU League, which hascollected almost 110,000 signatures on its anti-tax petition. "Weplan on presenting them to our congressional representatives at theGAC," Lowe told The Credit Union Journal. CUNA officials said about40 state credit union leagues are engaged in the petition drive,which will culminate at the credit unions' annual lobbyingpilgrimage during the GAC. Members at thousands of credit unionsare being asked to either sign the anti-tax petition at theircredit union branch or online. The wording differs from state tostate but all petitions have the same main goal, to discouragelawmakers from opening up the tax exemption for study.
