Employee Charged In Counterfeiting Ring

BATON ROUGE, La.-A former employee at BRECO FCU was charged with stealing the credit union's computer disks and using the enclosed member information to facilitate a counterfeit check ring that stole more than $100,000.

Maria Dawson, 27, is alleged by authorities to be the leader of a ring which compromised several area businesses and required several of them to close down checking accounts.

Dawson is charged with giving the credit union disks to Varnessa Fields, 39, then teaching fields how to produce and cash the bogus checks. When the checks were cashed, Dawson and Fields were given a percentage of the money, police said.
