On Deadline: Hearings On Harassment Case At CUNA Begin

The Madison Equal Employment Opportunities commission began a four-day hearing last week to decide the merits of a complaint filed against the Credit Union Nation Association by its former SVP, Michael J. Miller.

According to local news reports, Miller's complaint said he was fired in Sept. 2004 after reporting sexist, racist and homophobic remarks made by CFO John Franklin.

A commission employee said an unsuccessful attempt to reach a settlement was made last month. Miller, who was hired at CUNA in 1996, was promoted to SVP for association services in January 2004.

According to his grievance, Miller said he received no complaints about his job performance prior to reporting Franklin's behavior to superiors.

During testimony Franklin said he was shocked when he learned of the complaint and made no recommendation to fire Miller.
