Ore. CUs Gear Up For Hot Topic In 2005

This is a hot issue in Oregon! We faced a very serious threat from the bankers in the last legislative session with a bill to tax our state-chartered credit unions over $100 million in assets and giving the money to schools. In addition, our state had an $800-million budget deficit. With that large hole to fill, our legislators were looking for money from everywhere! The banker's bill did not pass, however, we are preparing for the next legislative session in 2005 with a strong grassroots, political and public relations strategy and asking our credit unions to support these efforts!

Our best response has been to continue to build our Credit Union Advocate network of people involved in protecting the future of credit unions. Staying active in the legislature, staying active in our legislator's campaigns, and building those local relationships, has always been our strength in Oregon.
