Redistricting In Texas Offering Opportunities

The controversy over congressional redistricting in Texas has provided credit unions with numerous opportunities to help proven supporters retain their seats and to recruit new credit union champions.

Among them is Kenny Marchant, the state representative who helped shepherd last year's credit union reform bill through the legislature, and who has received the maximum $10,000 campaign contribution from CUNA in his bid for one of the state's 32 House seats. Marchant was one of a dozen congressional candidates in Texas to receive CUNA support in the weeks prior to this month's primaries.

CUNA contributed a total of $94,000 to 21 of the Texas races before the primaries. CUNA said its PAC made a total of $138,000 in campaign contributions nationwide last month, $15,000 of it to candidates in the Texas primaries.
