Russian Visitors Meet With NASCUS, NCUA

NASCUS hosted two visiting credit union representatives from Russia who were seeking information on the structure of American credit unions and how NASCUS works with the state credit union system to enhance supervision.

Vadim Kalinichev and Vladimir Lukov spent a week in the United States on a World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU)-sponsored trip learning about the U.S. credit union system and meeting with representatives from credit union and banking organizations. Joined by Cassie Rademaekers, WOCCU Program Specialist, and Ksenia Boitsova, translator, the group met in the NASCUS offices in Arlington. "The Russians shared very interesting information about their credit union system, and it's a learning experience for us as well as for them," said NASCUS CEO Mary Martha Fortney.

Kalinichev is the General Director of the Russian Credit Union League, which includes 212 credit unions, or "cooperatives" as they are called in Russia. Lukov is the deputy director with the Department of Financial Policy in the Finance Ministry of the Russian Federation. He explained his role in the development of financial markets in various levels of the Russian government.

The group also visited NCUA's offices.
