Senate Beats Back Amendments ToBankruptcy Bill

WASHINGTON - (03/03/05) -- The Senate continued Wednesday tofend off amendments to the bankruptcy reform bill, includingseveral aimed at aiming responsibility for the surge in bankruptcyfilers at credit card companies. One amendment proposed by Sen.Daniel Akaka, D-Hawaii, would have required credit card companiesto disclose the costs of carrying a balance on monthly credit cardbills, but it was easily defeated by supporters of the currentbill. Several other amendments proposed by Democratic opponents ofthe bill were also defeated. The debate on the credit union-backedbankruptcy bill is expected to continue for the rest of this weekand into next week before a final vote is taken.
