Why Aren't All ATMs Shared, As Well?

Glad to see this issue (shared branching) pushed! (Frank Diekmann's column, CU Journal, Sept. 6). I'll go one step further, Why don't all credit unions have reciprocal agreements with other credit unions for ATMs? Unfortunately in Maryland, several large credit unions have stated "we're big enough and have more ATM's than you, so it wouldn't benefit us to waive fees." My response is always, "What ever happened to the word cooperative in our description." If all, or even most, credit unions would cooperate with branches and ATMs like we do with information, no bank would have an advantage over us!
