WOCCU Joins Remittances Group

The World Council of Credit Unions, Inc. (WOCCU) has been invited by Inter- American Dialogue to join a task force on remittances. Supported by the Rockefeller Foundation, the 15- member task force-with members from the United States, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean-will tackle topics related to shaping a policy agenda on remittances for the governments of Latin America and the United States, and for international organizations. The task force's first meeting was March 1 in Washington, D.C.; others are scheduled in May and September. David Grace, WOCCU's financial and regulatory affairs manager, sits on the task force. "WOCCU sees this as an important avenue to advocate for its members' policy issues related to remittances," says Grace, adding that WOCCU's position at the March 1 meeting was to advocate for greater competition in remittances. WOCCU is also encouraging governments to allow credit unions to access central bank clearing and settlement systems, thereby creating more efficient, transparent and secure financial systems.
