Penn. CUs Aid Kenyan Cause

HARRISBURG, Penn.-The Pennsylvania Credit Union Foundation has made a $5,000 grant to Strathmore College, Nairobi, Kenya. "The funds will be used by Strathmore to teach WOCCU's PEARLS program," said Chairman John Kebles, The grant is the first step in a continuing process by the Pennsylvania Credit Union Association to provide assistance to Kenya's Credit Union Movement.

DCUC To Honor Two CU Leaders

SAN DIEGO-The Defense Credit Union Council will induct two people into its Hall of Honor when it meets here for its annual meeting Aug. 17-20. Inducted will be Robert Dean Hopper of Fort Sill FCU in Oklahoma, and Paul E. Norton of SAC FCU in Nebraska. For more info: www.dcuc.org.

Detroit FCU Gets New Name

DETROIT-$140-million Detroit Federal Employees Credit Union has changed its name to Peoples Trust Credit Union. The credit union said it changed the name after expanding its membership beyond federal employees to include state, county, city, township and public school district employees in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. The credit union, originally chartered in1928, has 24,000 members and three locations in Detroit.

Millbrook FCU OKs Merger

HARRISON, Ark.-The members of Millbrook FCU have voted to merge with Telcoe FCU. The $143-million, Little Rock, Ark.-based Telcoe FCU has 17,500 members.

Polish CU Pioneer Honored

WARSAW, Poland-Grzegorz Bierecki, who heads up Poland's credit union trade association and who is also a member of the World Council of CU's board, has been recognized for 2002 edition of "Businessman of the Year. " Bierecki was included for his prime role in the successful growth of the Polish credit union system, which now serves 750,000 people through 1,000 credit unions, or SKOKs.
