Anthrax-Affected CU Returns

WASHINGTON D.C.-Nearly two-and-one-half years after being forced out of its offices due to the risk of exposure to anthrax, $20-million Washington Postal Employees FCU has returned to its former quarters in the U.S. Postal Service's Brentwood facility here. In 2001, two workers at the facility were killed by exposure to anthrax that was inside letters being processed for delivery to members of Congress. The closure of the facility-and WPEFCU's lone offices-also meant the credit union was not permitted to remove any records or equipment.

A number of other credit unions, the D.C. league, the National Council of Postal Credit Unions, and Encore Electronic Services Cooperative, all pitched in with money, manpower and other assistance to allow the credit union to begin functioning again by operating out of two other credit unions. "The expenses relating to this disaster have been staggering, and it's not over yet," says CEO Patricia Yates. Mid-Atlantic Corporate FCU is spearheading a relief effort for the CU.
