PALS Heads To California

Oregon CUs Raise $28,900

BEAVERTON, Ore.-Following a July 1 kickoff of Project Participation 2004 Credit Union Legislative Action Council Month, Oregon's credit unions have raised more than $28,900. That represents 1,561 individuals participating from 38 credit unions, the Credit Union Association of Oregon, CUNA Mutual, and Poorman-Douglas Corp. The original goal was to raise $20,000. Meanwhile, in Dallas, the Texas league has added the ability to make donations electronically to its PAC via its website. The league noted that while it raised a record $200,000 for its TCUL PAC this year, Texas' bankers donated more than $1 million to federal and state candidates over the same period. Ballow Announces Retirement

MONTGOMERY, Ala.-Thomas E. Ballow said he will retire as CEO of MAX Federal Credit Union on Dec. 31. Ballow joined MAX as EVP in May of 1973 after serving as a manager for Birmingham Credit Union for eight years. He had also served as a volunteer on the MAX Board of Directors for 15 years. During Mr. Ballow's tenure with MAX, the credit union grew to $625-million from $30 million and membership increased to 93,000 from 20,000, it moved to a community charter, added 11 branches and expanded services. He was also active in a variety of volunteer roles. No replacement has been named.

CUES Intros Future Leader Awards

MADISON, Wis.-The Credit Union Executives Society has introduced a new recognition program called "CUES Future Leader" to honor up-and-coming credit union executives. The judging panel, which will consist of past CUES Executive of the Year honorees, will evaluate CUES Future Leader nominees based on criteria such as accomplishments made within their credit unions and the movement in general; contributions made to CUES and its Councils; the level of professional development and education achieved by the nominee.
