1,000th bank joins home loan system.

WASHINGTON -- The Federal Housing Finance Board said United Carolina Bank has become the 1,000th commercial bank to join the Federal Home Loan Bank System.

Banks now are almost one-third of the system's members, said Daniel F. Evans, chairman of the finance board, which oversees the home loan banks. Before 1989, the system served thrifts only.

United Carolina Bank, based in Whiteville, N.C., has $2.5 billion in assets. Thirty-nine other bank system members have at least $1 billion.
