1st Union Widens Commercial Realty Horizon

First Union Capital Markets Group has opened commercial real estate offices in the Southwest and Midwest and has wooed executives from two rival banking companies to run them.

The unit of Charlotte, N.C.-based First Union Corp. tapped Michael Spoor and Clay Wright, veterans of Banc One Corp., to manage the Southwest office, in Houston. Mr. Spoor was president of Banc One Commercial Loan Origination Corp., and previously was a managing director of Banc One's commercial mortgage servicing group. Mr. Wright underwrote commercial loans and portfolio management at Banc One.

Meanwhile, David De Bauche jumped from Sanwa Business Credit Corp. to manage First Union Capital Markets' new Midwest office, in Chicago.

The new hires were all named vice presidents. They report to Steve Jones, product delivery and client management director of the commercial real estate capital markets group.

First Union, with $143 billion of assets June 30, is the nation's sixth- largest banking company.
