Ala.'s Central adopting 'Compass' name.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Central Bancshares of the South Inc. is changing its name to Compass Bancshares Inc. to ease future expansion and to capitalize on the advantages of operating under one name, the company's chairman and chief executive officer, D. Paul Jones Jr., has announced.

The change becomes official in November when all Central Bank offices in Alabama, Florida, and Texas will be united under the Compass Bank name.

Compass was first chosen as the name for Central's Texas banks in 1987 because the name "Central" was unavailable when the company acquired its first bank in the Houston are. The name was selected because of its compatibility with the company's established logo and its availability in target markets.

Central's Nasdaq national market system trading symbol will change from CBSS to COMP in November.
