Amex posts $39M in 3d-quarter profit.

NEW YORK -- American Express Company reported third quarter net income of $369 million.

Travel Related Services, the company's charge and credit card division, reported net income of $264 million, a 13% increase over last year's income.

Net revenues increased 9%, which the company attributes to a surge in worldwide billed business and growth in business travel sales.

American Express said that its growth reflects higher spending per cardmember and an increase in the number of cards outstanding.
