Atlantic Bank and Trust Co. has bought a pool of loans from two private sector sellers, adding nearly $56 million of assets to its portfolio.

The Boston-based bank paid $47.7 million for 90 loans, most of which originated in California and are backed by commercial real estate. Atlantic, with $457 million of assets, said it bought 39% more loan balances in the fourth quarter than in the same period in 1997.
