BancorpSouth of Miss. Buying Biggest Agency in State

BancorpSouth of Tupelo, Miss. announced Monday that it will buy the largest insurance agency in the state within 60 days.

The $5.5 billion-asset banking company said Stewart Sneed Hewes Group in Gulfport would bring a range of property and casualty insurance products to the product menu offered by BancorpSouth Insurance Services.

"We saw that it would be a good fit in being able to expand the lines that we already offer," said Randy Burchfield, a BancorpSouth spokesman.

The 100-year-old agency has 105 employees and is one of the 75 largest in the United States.

Financial terms of the stock-swap deal were not disclosed. The agency would keep its name and management, Mr. Burchfield said.

Stewart Sneed also sells life, health, and employee benefit coverage at five offices across Mississippi.
