Banks Up in Pre-Holiday Trading

Bank stocks and the broader markets were lifted Monday on light trading ahead of the Fourth of July weekend.

The KBW Bank Index rose 1.59%, the Dow Jones industrial average 1.08% and the Standard & Poor's 500 index 0.91%.

"In the absence of news or preannouncements, there's just generally positive feelings," said James Bradshaw, an analyst at Bridge City Capital LLC in Portland, Ore.

JPMorgan Chase & Co. was up 0.4%, Bank of America Corp. 3.5%, Wells Fargo & Co. 2.8%, PNC Financial Services Group Inc. 0.5% and U.S. Bancorp 0.9%.

Citigroup Inc. fell a penny, to $3.02 a share.

Among the regional banking companies, SunTrust Banks Inc. rose 2.8%, Capital One Financial Corp. 2%, Zions Bancorp. 2.9%, M&T Bank Corp. 4.5%, Fifth Third Bancorp Inc. 1.7% and Regions Financial Corp. 12 cents a share, to $4.07.
