Broad acceptance of smart cards is years away, but two of three card executives polled by the Smart Card Forum think that 25% of households will be using them routinely for everyday purchases by 2000. The biggest obstacle: a lack of uniform standards for the cards. Still, the respondents expect that half a billion cards will be in force worldwide in five years.
