Brubaker tapped as president and CEO of Bay View.

John E. Brubaker, 51, was named president and chief executive officer of both Bay View Capital Corp. and its wholly owned subsidiary, Bay View Federal Bank of San Mateo, Calif., effective Dec. 10.

Mr. Brubaker, who has been the bank's senior executive vice president and chief operating officer since January, will join both entities' boards immediately. Robert E. Barnes will step down as president and CEO of the bank and holding company in December and will retire from both next April 1.

Bruno A. Malucchi continues as chairman of Bay View Capital.

Mr. Brubaker is a 30-year veteran of commercial banking. He formerly was president and chief executive of Firstbank of Illinois. Before joining Bay View, he was chairman, president, and CEO for one year of Central Bank of Walnut Creek, Calif., just before its 1990 sale to Bank of the West.

Bay View is a $2.5 billion-asset federal savings bank with headquarters in San Mateo.
