Capital Briefs: Georgian to Join House Banking Panel

Rep. Cynthia McKinney, D-Ga., will join the House Banking Committee following the Feb. 18 resignation of Rep. Kweisi Mfume, D-Md.

Rep. McKinney is dropping her seat on the agriculture committee to join the banking panel because a reapportionment plan will reduce the number of rural voters in her district, a spokesman said. Rep. Mfume is leaving Congress to become chief executive of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Rep. McKinney, 40, is serving her second term and also sits on the International Relations committee. She is a doctoral candidate in International Relations at Tufts University.

Her appointment to the banking committee fills the last open position on the 52-member panel. Joining the committee in December were Rep. Tom Campbell, R-Calif., and Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., D-Ill. Their seats were added in December when House leaders decided to increase the committee's size.
