Card Briefs: American Express Puts Account Data on Web

American Express Co. said Tuesday its cardholders can access their card and Membership Rewards account information on the World Wide Web.

Cardholders must register with the company's ExpressNet service first before they can go to the Web site (www.americanexpress.com) to view their current billing statements.

Charge cardholders can check statements up to four months old; Optima holders can view statements up to 12 months old. Users can see charges that have not yet been billed. Membership Rewards program members can see their point balance, updated monthly.

ExpressNet has enabled card members who subscribe to America Online to access account information since 1995. The service allows customers to apply for cards, enroll in the rewards program, book travel reservations and tickets, and take advantage of special offers.

2 Banks Buy FranchiseFor Mondex in Ireland

LONDON-Mondex International said on Tuesday that two Irish banks will develop Mondex, the stored value smart card system, in the Emerald Isle.

Ulster Bank and National Irish Bank, a subsidiary of National Australia Bank, purchased the Irish franchise and will form a joint venture to promote the system. The two banks will join 20 other banks as equity owners in Mondex, which is 51% owned by MasterCard International.

Mondex has franchises around the globe, including the United States, Canada, Asia, and Australia.
