Card Briefs: Electronic Purse Gains Popularity in Denmark

Danmont, the Danish smart card company, announced that the country's electronic purse program experienced a 122% increase in transaction volume in 1995, to 2.1 million, over the previous year.

In the fourth quarter of last year, 700,000 transactions were completed, a 28% increase over the previous quarter.

The project, which is entering its fourth year, was world's first open smart card system - it can be used at many locations throughout the country, such as public telephones, vending machines, transportation, parking meters, and local shops.

The cards are intended to replace cash and change for purchases under $10.
