Several of Ukraine's commercial banks have selected the Maestro and Cirrus brands for debit card and automated teller machine services, Europay International announced.

Bank Ukraina, Avalbank, Ukrinbank, Percombank, and Privaatbank agreed on debit card operations with the central bank, the National Bank of Ukraine, and expect to issue 100,000 cards in the first phase.

The move follows the introduction of Eurocard-MasterCard credit cards last September by Bank Ukraina and Percombank. They have since been joined by Ukrexim Bank, and others will follow, Europay said.

"Real momentum is being felt," and the Ukrainian banks anticipate rapid growth "both in terms of card issuance and acceptance," said Carine Janssens, Eastern Europe business manager for Europay, an affiliate of MasterCard International.
