Card Briefs: HP Web Server Gets Rainbow Accelerator

Rainbow Technologies Inc. will supply its CryptoSwift line of cryptographic accelerators on a private-label basis for inclusion in Hewlett-Packard Co. Web server systems.

The OEM-original equipment manufacturer-versions of CryptoSwift, to be delivered this quarter, will improve the ability of HP 9000 Enterprise Servers to handle the Secure Sockets Layer and Secure Electronic Transaction encryption protocols, which can otherwise slow the completion of credit card and other electronic commerce processing.

"Together, HP and Rainbow will provide unparalleled performance," said Nigel Ball, general manager of Hewlett-Packard's Internet and applications systems division. "Our combined technologies will ensure that customers running SSL and SET secure e-commerce applications receive the highest performance available from their secure Web servers."

Rainbow vice chairman Peter Craig said the improvement comes from "offloading the public key encryption, leaving the server free to perform other tasks. The incorporation of CryptoSwift into HP servers allows end- user purchasers greater economy and return on investment than ever before."
