Card briefs: MasterCard Begins Push For Debit Cards in Korea

MasterCard International said it has initiated distribution of more than five million Maestro debit cards and established 5,000 Maestro-branded acceptance locations in Korea.

Within a year, 18 financial institutions, representing 80% of the country's deposit base, are expected to issue 10 million Maestro cards. About 30,000 Maestro-accepting terminals will be installed over the next 12 months.

MasterCard said it has more than 17 million Maestro cards in the Asia/Pacific region. Compiled by Robert Jennings
