Card Briefs: Mondex Hires PNC Exec for Merchant Post

Mondex USA has appointed PNC Bank Corp. executive Paula R. Kramer to the new post of director of merchant strategy.

She reports to president and chief executive officer Janet S. Crane. Ms. Kramer will focus on recruiting and involving smaller, independent merchants in the smart-card-based electronic cash program.

At PNC in Pittsburgh, Ms. Kramer, 41, was vice president and general manager of merchant services, responsible for 30,000 clients, $7 billion of annual credit card volume, and a staff of 80.

From 1992 to 1994 she was principal and marketing director at Transaction Processing Inc., now a part of Banc One Corp.'s Paymentech Inc. merchant processing unit. Before that she spent 13 years at Mellon Bank in Pittsburgh.

Ms. Kramer and Ms. Crane worked together at Mellon and Transaction Processing Inc.

"I have known Paula for more than 15 years and have watched her design and execute business strategies," Ms. Crane said. "She is very market- and customer-focused and brings a new level of merchant expertise and perspective to Mondex USA."
