Card Briefs: Smart Card Reader Developed for PCs

SCM Microsystems, a supplier of personal-computer cards, has developed SwapSmart, a fully compatible PC card reader/writer for smart cards.

SwapSmart is a compact smart card reader that integrates smart cards into a desktop or laptop PC through the standard card slot on the side of the computer. SwapSmart features a highly integrated two-chip patented design.

The reader will be available in a stainless steel extended PC card format for the Windows, Windows 95, DOS, and OS/2 operating systems in the first quarter of 1996 at a cost of $199.

SwapSmart supports international standard smart card protocols and asynchronous and synchronous smart cards.

A SwapSmart Software Developer's Tool Kit is available for $499. Developers can use it to create their own smart card-based applications. The kit includes SwapSmart, a SwapBox PC card drive, two smart cards, and a manual.
