Card Briefs: Wachovia Names Credit Division Head

Beverly B. Wells, who has headed Wachovia Bank Card Services Inc. since 1994, has been promoted to lead Wachovia Corp.'s consumer credit division.

Charles M. Hegarty, who has served as marketing manager of Wachovia's bank card division since joining the bank in 1995, has succeeded Ms. Wells.

Wachovia, with dual headquarters in Atlanta and Winston-Salem, N.C., has 3.5 million credit card customers and a portfolio of more than $5 billion in receivables.

Ms. Wells joined Wachovia in 1976 and has managed the institutional operations, corporate product management, and treasury services groups. She took over the card operation from Jerry D. Craft, who left the bank to form a credit card management firm.

Under Ms. Wells' leadership, "Wachovia Bank Card Services charted new strategies, developed a strong management team, streamlined operations, and significantly improved financial performance," said G. Joseph Prendergast, head of Wachovia's banking division.
