Card briefs: Wireless POS Device From a Joint Venture

The product, called Retail Xcellence, was jointly developed by Systems Xcellence Inc., Ericsson Communications Canada, and Omega Digital Data Inc. Retail Xcellence, which will be available in January, provides retailers with a flexible, affordable way to receive card payments from consumers. Retailers will be able to use the wireless device, which is fully programmable and linked to a transaction processor, for real-time access to banks for transaction approvals. The device itself, which includes a PIN pad and a printer, was created by Omega, based in Concord, Ontario. Transactions will be sent via Ericsson's wireless data network, Mobitex, which operates in 15 countries. Ericsson Communications Canada, based in Mississauga, Ontario, is a division of Ericsson Communications Inc., a provider of cellular systems. Systems Xcellence, based in Milton, Ontario, developed the transaction processing software for Retail Xcellence. The software offers features such as point of sale credit and debit authorization, as well as the ability to develop affinity card programs and use smart card systems. - Compiled by Beth Piskora
