Cards Briefs: Europay Reports Advances in Bulgaria

Europay International, continuing to bring modernized payment services to the former Soviet bloc nations, has reported major progress in Bulgaria.

The MasterCard affiliate said United Bulgarian Bank opened the first automated teller machines in the country to international cardholders and committed to issuing Eurocard/MasterCard credit cards.

Europay said an initial 60 ATMs-150 by yearend-will accept cards bearing the Eurocheque, Eurocard, Cirrus, or MasterCard logos.

United Bulgarian Bank also plans to allow international acceptance of its own 20,000 debit cards this year. Europay regional business manager Craig Browne said other member banks in the country are poised to follow that lead.
