Cards Briefs: MasterCard Hires EC Cubed for Web Commerce Project

MasterCard International has signed a marketing and product development agreement with EC Cubed Inc. of Wilton, Conn.

EC Cubed will provide enabling technology for MasterCard's business-to- business electronic commerce infrastructure, and will work with MasterCard to develop a range of on-line business-to-business applications.

The first project is to develop an open, Internet-based data capture system for MasterCard corporate purchasing cards. EC Cubed's ecWorks will underpin an Internet-based commercial card gateway through which purchase- order data will be transmitted from any front-end electronic procurement software to the MasterCard purchasing system.

The system will accommodate the detailed itemization of purchase information known as Level 3, said Steve Abrams, senior vice president of U.S. corporate products at MasterCard. The technology will "deliver line- item data to corporate buyers without the need for merchants to invest in changing their payment infrastructure."
