Cards Briefs: Verifone Set to Ship 6-Millionth POS Unit

Verifone Inc. said it has received a sizable order for OmniPak point of sale systems from First Data Merchant Services Corp., including the six-millionth system that Verifone has shipped.

Verifone chief executive officer Hatim Tyabji said the company for the first time has passed two million-terminal milestones within a year.

The First Data Corp. division is the leader in the acquiring of credit card merchant transactions, having processed 5.9 billion of them last year.

First Data plans to offer the compact OmniPak units to merchants with a choice of two terminals, depending on volumes.

The deal is the latest in a long-term relationship with Verifone, said Peter Gustafson, First Data executive vice president of product management. He said the companies "share a common corporate philosophy that the customer always comes first."
