Carolina First buys a stake in ComSouth.

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Carolina First Corp. announced the purchase of 4.9% of the common shares of ComSouth Bankshares Inc. with an option to acquire an additional 4.9% upon receipt of regulatory approval.

Carolina First, which has $488 million in assets, said it was considering an acquisition of all or parts of ComSouth, the parent of Commercial Bank of the South in Columbia, S.C., and the Bank of Charleston, S.C. ComSouth had $89 million in assets at yearend 1991.

Carolina First Corp., owner of Carolina First Bank and Carolina First Savings Bank, is seeking to build a statewide network, said Mack I. Whittle, president and chief executive officer.
