As part of its consolidation efforts, Chemical Banking Corp. will buy $32 million worth of self-service terminals and branch automation systems to upgrade and standardize its branches. NCR Corp. will supply the new systems.

The contract includes automated teller machines with touch-sensitive screens, self-service terminals for inside banking lobbies, and about 6,600 workstations for tellers and platform personnel. The touch-screen units should be installed by yearend.

The platform automation system utilizes NCR's system 3000 series of open computers to allow Chemical to integrate software and hardware from a number of vendors. Each branch is equipped with NCR teller and platform workstations connected to the system server via a token-ring local area network.

The branch LAN is also linked to a host mainframe at Chemical's processing center in Delaware for centralized processing.

With more than $130 billion in assets, Chemical operates 700 retail branches throughout New York, New Jersey, and Texas.

NCR Corp. is based in Dayton, Ohio.
