A May 14 article, "Study: Most Sneaky Applications Are from Brokers" (page 8), erred in saying that a new data base shows brokers to be responsible for 7 of every 10 mortgage applications that turn out to be deceitful.
D. James Croft, the executive director of the Mortgage Asset Research Institute, said the 7-of-10 figure was based on an estimate he made, not on the data base.
The firm's data base does indicate brokers have a role in 73% of loan applications to more than one lender-which is not illegal-and in 53% of applications with "potential fraud flags."
