Discover Financial Services LLC said Monday that it has reintroduced two of its reward cards under different names, and a company executive left the door open for renaming more products.
The Riverwoods, Ill., issuer, which Morgan Stanley plans to spin off this year, renamed the Discover Platinum Card the Discover More Card, and it renamed the Discover Gas Card the Discover Open Road Card.
The cards' rewards and other features did not change.
Julie Loeger, Discover's vice president of marketing and rewards, said in an interview that the new names "more accurately" describe the benefits of the cards. The Open Road Card, for instance, offers rewards on purchases other than gas, she said.
The card offers 5% back on the first $1,200 spent on auto maintenance and gas purchases and 1% on all other spending. The More Card offers 5% cash back on purchases of things such as gas, travel, home, apparel, dining, and movies; Discover changes which purchases earn the benefit four times a year.
"'More' is just more relevant. It's more representative of what we offer reward points on," Ms. Loeger said.
When asked if Discover would evaluate the names of other products, she said, "We are going to do our best to use names that reflect our commitment and approach to our customers."
