Donaldson bank analyst is voted best in the field.

Tom Brown -- the bullish Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenerette Securities analyst who correctly predicted BankAmerica Corp.'s comeback -- has been voted best at his craft in a new American Banker survey.

The nationwide poll of bankers and investors identified an all-star team of analysts, based on regions and the types of institutions covered. Complete findings appear on pages 23 through 28.

Mr. Brown was cited for his overall knowledge of the business, and for being well ahead of the pack in identifying cost cutting as a major issue this year.

Respondents in the first annual survey named Richard Fredericks, of Montgomery Securities, as the foremost expert on regional banks, Ben Crabtree and Jay Tejera of Dain Bosworth as the top analysts of small regional banks, and Ronald I. Mandle of Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. as the best money-center analyst.
