Ex-Regulator Joins American General Financial

American General Financial Group has hired a former New York State superintendent of insurance, James P. Corcoran, as executive vice president, government and industry relations, a newly created position.

The $110 billion-asset company, based in Houston, provides retirement services, life insurance, and consumer loans.

Mr. Corcoran, 54, will be in charge of government, regulatory, and industry association relationships.

He will be based in New York but will also be in charge of the company's government affairs office in Washington.

He will report to Robert M. Devlin, chairman, president, and chief executive officer.

Mr. Corcoran was most recently a corporate partner in the New York office of the Winston & Strawn law firm, specializing in insurance law.

He was the state superintendent of insurance from 1983 to 1990.

In 1988 and 1989 he represented the U.S. Commerce Department before the insurance committee of the Organization of Economic Cooperation Development in Paris.

Before becoming the New York superintendent Mr. Corcoran was vice president for government relations at Prudential Insurance Company of America in New York.

Earlier he was assistant general counsel at Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York.
