National City Corp. in Cleveland has hired Michael J. Haney as an account executive in its private investment advisers division.

He is responsible for developing investment and estate planning strategies for the affluent client segment in Cleveland.

Before joining the $85 billion asset company Mr. Haney held a similar post in the investment management, brokerage and new business division at Cincinnati-based Fifth Third Bancorp.


MIDDLE ATLANTICABN Amro has hired Margo Vignola as head of research for the Americas in its global equities division.

Ms. Vignola was a managing director and co-director of U.S. equity research at Merrill Lynch & Co., where she worked for five years. Before that she had been a managing director in charge of hospital management, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology research at Salomon Brothers Inc., where she had worked for eight years.

Still earlier she had been a health-care analyst in San Francisco for four years at the L.F. Rothschild Unterberg Towbin investment bank, now C.E. Unterberg Towbin. She is based in New York and reports to Tina Beattie, global head of equity research, who is based in London, and Carolyn Moses, CEO of equities and investment banking, who is based in New York.

ABN Amro, a $511 billion-asset banking group, is based in the Netherlands.


U.S. Trust Corp. in New York said Jeffrey S. Mauer will move up from president to chief executive officer next year.Vice chairman Maribeth S. Rahe will succeed him at the Charles Schwab Corp. subsidiary, which manages $100 billion of client assets. Schwab bought the company at midyear.

Mr. Maurer, 53, will remain chief operating officer. He has been with U.S. Trust for 30 years, including 10 as president, six as chief operating officer, and 10 as head of its asset management and private banking group. He is a member of Schwab’s board of directors and internal executive management committee.

Ms. Rahe, 52, joined U.S. Trust three years ago as vice chairman. She came from Bank of Montreal’s Harris Bank in Chicago, where in nine years she rose from senior vice president to vice chairman responsible for retail banking operations, wealth management, trust and investments, and private banking.

Before joining Harris she had worked in London for Morgan Guaranty Trust Company of New York and in New York for J.P. Morgan Investment Management.


BNY Asset Solutions LLC, a Bank of New York subsidiary that provides asset servicing and management to the commercial mortgage and asset-backed-securities industries, has hired Dale Cooney as a senior vice president and director of sales.Mr. Cooney held a similar post for eight years at Archon Group, a commercial mortgage loan and real estate investment management company mostly owned by Goldman, Sachs & Co. While at Archon he had helped to launch offices in Europe, South America, Mexico, and Japan.

He has 15 years of experience in commercial loans and domestic and international mergers and acquisitions.
