First Union Taps Mark Treanor To Take Over as General Counsel

First Union Corp. of Charlotte, N.C., has named Mark C. Treanor to succeed its general counsel of more than two decades.

Mr. Treanor, 52, joined First Union as senior deputy counsel just last August. However, he represented it as a special counsel for more than 15 years at his own law firm, Treanor, Pope & Hughes.

Marion A. Cowell Jr., 64, is scheduled to retire Aug. 1. Mr. Cowell joined the company 27 years ago as general counsel for First Union Mortgage Corp., formerly Cameron-Brown Co. He became the parent company's general counsel in 1978.
