First Union to cut jobs at D.C.-area bank.

CHARLOTTE, N.C.--First Union Corp. said it expects to eliminate up to 200 jobs at First American Metro Corp. when it completes its acquisition of the Washington-area company at the end of June.

Another 900 workers will probably be put on "temporary status" in jobs that will be phased out this year, primarily at First American headquarters in McLean, Va. But First Union said many of these workers will be placed in other positions before their jobs end later this year.

First American Metro has 2,965 employees. First Union will eventually consolidate the operation with those of other recent acquisitions in the region: Dominion Bankshares, Meritor Savings, and Sailors and Merchants Bank and Trust.
