Former Utah banking chief joins board of Glacier

Glacier Bancorp in Kalispell, Mont., has appointed George Sutton, a former commissioner of the Utah Department of Financial Institutions, to its board.

Sutton will serve on the $9.9 billion-asset company’s audit, compliance, compensation, nominating and governance and risk committees, Glacier said Tuesday in a press release.

He served as Utah’s banking commissioner from 1987 to 1992, overseeing regulations for all state-chartered depository institutions and all consumer financial services providers.

For more than two decades, Sutton has specialized in bank regulation and assisted clients with new bank and other regulatory applications, provided compliance reviews of products and services and advised boards and management teams on regulation and corporate governance matters. He has been an attorney and of counsel to Jones Waldo Holbrook & McDonough in Salt Lake City since March 2008.

From July 2009 to December 2016, Sutton served on the board Synchrony Bank, formerly known as GE Capital Retail Bank. Synchrony Bank is a subsidiary of Synchrony Financial, which was spun off from General Electric in 2015.

Glacier has been an active acquirer, buying a dozen banks since the beginning of 2006. It has a deal pending to purchase the $466 million-asset Columbine Capital Corp. in Buena Vista, Colo.
