Grocery Chain Picks Verifone Pay System

Hewlett-Packard Co.'s Verifone division said its Internet payment technology has been chosen by Furr's Supermarkets Inc.

Seeking to be one of the first supermarket chains to bridge the physical and virtual retailing worlds-an idea reflected in Verifone's offerings- Furr's is selling about 15,000 products via its Web site. Orders can be delivered to homes or offices or picked up at a store.

Bank of America Merchant Services provides the gateway services for on- line payments, using secure Internet transaction software from Verifone.

Verifone offers "100% uptime and fast transaction processing, which is vital to our business," said Buz Doyle, president of Furr's Supermarkets in Albuquerque.
