The banking agencies on Thursday released guidance intended to strengthen the independence of the appraisal process.

The regulators said the guidance seeks to "emphasize the importance of the independence of an institution's appraisal and evaluation program from influence by the loan production process or borrower," according to a notice in the Federal Register.

The guidelines require a paper trail that would "contain sufficient information to support the institution's credit decision," the notice said.
