Holman named vice president at South Trust.

SouthTrust Securities Inc., a subsidiary of SouthTrust Corp. based in Birmingham, Ala., announced that R. Kendall Holman has been named vice president and manager of its capital markets department.

Mr. Holman, 34, formerly the director of the health-care group of Van Kampen Merritt in Chicago, will oversee SouthTrust's public and corporate finance activities. The public finance department focuses on Alabama, but plans to develop a presence in South Carolina, North Carolina, Florida, Tennessee, and Georgia, Mr. Holman said.

For Mr. Holman, the appointment also represents a homecoming. He was raised in Dothan, Ala., a town in the extreme southeast corner of the state and he began his career in finance at Thornton, Farrish & Gauntt, an investment baking firm based in Montgomery, Ala. Mr. Holman then moved to New York to join Thomson McKinnon Securities.

"When I left Alabama for Thomson McKinnon, I always knew in the back of my mind that I would return to the state,' Mr. Holman said, adding that he hopes to use the experience he gained on Wall Street in his new post.

Prior to joining Van Kampen Merritt, Mr. Holman was a vice president and manager of public finance and private placements at Credit Suisse in New York City. He has also worked at Chemical Bank in New York.
