Home Builder's Loss Narrows

Beazer Homes USA Inc. reported its seventh consecutive quarterly loss Friday.

Its fiscal third-quarter net loss narrowed 7.5% from a year earlier, to $109.8 million, or $2.85 a share, the Atlanta builder said.

Beazer pulled out of the Colorado and Fresno, Calif., markets during the quarter and said it sees no improvement in the housing market.

"Industry conditions will remain challenging for the remainder of this fiscal year and as we enter fiscal 2009," chief executive Ian McCarthy said.

The quarterly loss included pretax expenses of $95.5 million to abandon options to buy land and to write down inventory, 38% less than a year earlier.

New orders tumbled 42%, to 1,774, and the cancellation rate was 37% compared with 36% a year earlier.
