In Brief:

Firm Developing Image System for Check Security

A printing firm is touting a new high-tech weapon in the battle against check fraud.

The product, being developed by Mounds View, Minn.-based Liberty Check Printers, would scan an account holder's picture into a computer and then transfer it to a bar code that would appear on each check. At the time of sale, a clerk would scan the bar code using Liberty software to recall the picture.

The result, according to Michael Provenzano, Liberty's executive vice president for technology, would be quicker and more accurate approval of checks for both bankers and retailers.

The technology was introduced last week at the National Association of Federal Credit Unions Technology Forum and Trade Show. Mr. Provenzano said Liberty hopes to begin a pilot program this year.
